Bridge Rescue Efforts Slowed by Concerns Over Safety

Chief Tim Dolan or the Minneapolis Police Department said that an estimated 20 to 30 people were missing. Sheriff Stanek said that about 12 cars could be seen submerged in the river, though there may be more that cannot be seen. More than 60 people were injured, news services reported.Recovery efforts were suspended last night at midnight because strong and unpredictable currents, debris in the water and the instability of the collapsed bridge endangered rescue workers.

Officials said that the recovery operation could take three to five days, and the bridge was being treated as a crime scene, though indications are that it collapsed.
